Saved searches

A saved search is a channel that keeps watch for you. Give it a few words, and everything new from your sources that mentions them lands there: a story in a feed, a newsletter, a standard.site post, or, if the channel includes them, a link someone you follow shared. It looks through your saves too, old and new.

Saved searches are part of the Supporter plan, which includes up to 25. Without it, the Saved search field shows greyed out in the channel editor.

Choose New channel under Channels, type keywords under Saved search, and uncheck any sources it should leave out. A new channel starts with every source checked, your saves included; Select none clears them so you can pick a few. A saved search looks through Your saves as a whole; Your Shelf on its own isn’t searched yet. Saved searches use the same words as search:

TypeMatches
tidal energyitems with both words, in any order
"tidal energy"the exact phrase
tid*words starting with “tid”
energy -winditems with “energy” but not “wind”

While you type, Skyreader checks the search against the last month of items from the sources you picked, read or not, and your newest saves, and shows how many match and a few of them, so you can tell whether it’s too broad or too narrow. Links shared by people you follow aren’t in the preview, though the channel picks them up.

Any feed channel can become a saved search: open it with Edit channel and add keywords under Saved search. Take them out again and it goes back to being an ordinary channel.

A new saved search starts by looking back through the last 30 days of its sources, and through every save, so it doesn’t open empty. The first matches usually show within seconds of saving. After that, new items that match arrive within a few minutes, whether or not Skyreader is open.

Each item shows the passage it matched, with your words marked. A story that reached you several ways, say in a feed and in a link three people shared, appears once.

Matching reads the whole text each source sends. Some feeds only send a summary, and for those only the summary is searched. For links your follows share, Skyreader fetches the article to search it; on a very busy day some links are matched on the post and its link card alone.

Matches are kept for 90 days, except your saves, which stay as long as you keep them. Reading one marks it read everywhere, the same as reading it anywhere else. A save counts as read once you archive it.

Editing the words or the sources clears what the channel matched and looks back through the last 30 days again. Renaming it, or changing how it shows items, keeps everything.

If you have more saved searches than your plan includes, the oldest keep matching and the newer ones keep what they have but get nothing new. Without the plan, your saved searches stay as they are and pick up again when you rejoin.

A saved search is private to you. It’s kept on Skyreader’s servers with your channels, and isn’t published with Atmospheric sync.
